B8356: Financing Innovation in Healthcare

This course, offered through the Healthcare and Pharmaceutical Management Program at Columbia Business School, provides a structured framework for understanding how innovation in the healthcare sector is financed. The first half focuses on the biopharmaceutical industry, highlighting valuation challenges and the risk–return trade-offs that shape investment decisions, as well as the roles of government funding, nonprofit organizations, venture capital, and mergers and acquisitions in advancing innovation. The second half examines U.S. hospitals, analyzing how financial structures and external capital influence care quality and technology adoption. The course is designed for graduate-level students interested in the intersection of finance, innovation, and health policy. Course slides with restricted access are available here.
